AS 2 - Task Three - Analyse the track

The song I chose is the opening track to Halsey's album 'Badlands' and is about 4 minutes long. The lyrics suggest that this song is almost like an introduction into her life, being the first track on the album and it's almost as if the castle is her home and she is about to reveal her life to us. The track has a dark vibe about it and has a slower pace than some of her other songs, which suggests that their could be a deeper meaning behind it. 

It is one of her fewer tracks that isn't about love but still details some sort of relationship, most likely between her and the music industry. Halsey has stated that her album is an 'angry female record' which is evident in the chorus of the song. It is clear that in this song she is emphasising her anger against the male-dominated world of popular music and this is clear from the way she sings the song, throughout she remains on a lower tone rather than breaking into a higher note. It could be argued that she is starting her new reign with this track and album, making a comeback in the music industry. 

The meaning behind the song is clearly a woman's fight to have her say in a male-dominated society. The opening lines suggest how women are the highlight of the media and this song shows how she wants to fight this. We follow her journey to become the queen and overrule the throne, fighting obstacles in her way, arguably the fight for equality and freedom.
